Metal vs. Acrylic Signage: Which Material Is Right for Your Business?

Choosing the right material for your signage is one of the first decisions a business makes when investing in its storefront, office, or exhibition presence. At Point to Point Advertising Designs, we’re often asked the same question: should it be metal or acrylic? The honest answer is that it depends on where the sign will live, how it needs to perform, and the look you’re going for.

Metal vs. Acrylic Signage: Which Material Is Right for Your Business?

The Case for Metal Signage

Metal signs, whether in stainless steel, aluminium, or brushed brass, are built for durability. They hold up well against the UAE’s heat and humidity, resist fading, and give a premium, permanent feel that suits corporate offices, government buildings, and high-end retail. Metal is also the go-to choice for 3D letters and channel lettering that need to hold their shape outdoors for years. The trade-off is cost and weight: metal fabrication takes longer and is generally a bigger investment than acrylic.

The Case for Acrylic Signage

Acrylic is lightweight, budget-friendly, and incredibly versatile. It can be laser-cut into intricate shapes, backlit for a soft glow effect, and finished in almost any colour. This makes it a favourite for retail interiors, reception signage, and directional signs where design flexibility matters more than heavy-duty outdoor exposure. Acrylic is also faster to produce, which helps when you’re working to a tight opening date.

Which Should You Choose?

As a rule of thumb: choose metal for long-term outdoor signage that needs to withstand the elements and project permanence, and choose acrylic for interior signage, backlit displays, and projects where design detail and speed matter most. Many of our clients actually combine both — a metal frame or structure with acrylic inserts — to get the best of both worlds.
